Religion and Morality, Vital Supports of Good Government
The political left, and libertarian elements in the political right, often deny the connection between religion and morality to the success of free government, and to the sort of well balanced education that will support a self-government not bent on self-destruction - but the founders didn’t. From the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, the year of Constitution, we read:
Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.
